Graphics Drivers

Your computer's monitor is central to the experience it provides. Almost all of the information you receive through your operating system's graphical user interface is presented to you through the display, with the exception of audio. Of course, it would be rather difficult even to play a song without this visual aid. Needless to say, since the device plays a primary role for the user, it is extremely important that it function correctly and as expected in all circumstances. Drivers act as a connecting sublayer that bridge the gap between the operating system the user is running and the hardware in their computer. Just about every single component on a computer requires drivers to function properly, and the video hardware on a computer is no different. The difference between a fluid, enjoyable experience and a frustratingly difficult one can hinge on having the correct drivers installed.

While in a perfect world hardware manufacturers wouldn't release a graphics card model without first doing absolutely thorough testing to ensure that there were no flaws or glitches, the time constraints imposed upon developers and coders often means that minor, and sometimes major problems slip through. Since drivers are software, luckily updates can be and usually are made available from the manufacturer's website for download over the internet. This means that if the code wasn't up to par the first time, so long as the bug or bugs in the drivers are caught they can be fixed in a timely fashion. How fast this occurs depends on how obvious the problem is, and how many people complain about it. The larger a customer base, the more likely it is that a higher number of individuals will raise concerns about it; this does not however, make the big players in the market immune to delays.

Hardware defects cannot be fixed by software updates, but usually manifest themselves more blatantly than driver problems and are quite rare due to the precision of the automated manufacture process. Usually, physical defects present themselves to the user as complete failure of the component; it may stop working completely or overheat. If you have these issues, no amount of updated drivers will help you and your best course of action would be to contact the manufacturer to alert them and potentially get a replacement.

On the other hand, driver problems usually manifest themselves in more subtle ways that may not be obvious at first. One of the most common examples is a moderate loss of performance in high stress 3d gaming applications. This performance loss may not be apparent in every game that is played. In fact, one of the telltale signs that indeed the driver is the source of the problem is in the event that although in most 3d game applications the graphics hardware performs exactly as advertised, there are one or two games that take a fairly significant or noticeable hit in performance. Usually, the best measure of this is the frame rate during play. Of course, there are other problems which can present themselves in this environment as well, including improper rendering of textures, missing polygons, and other abnormalities.

Important to note, however, is that driver problems may not only present themselves within a high stress gaming environment. Even spreadsheet creation or word processing activities can be hampered by malformed driver content. One glitch that has been known to occur with some drivers which will stop all work completely can be described as the screen "freezing" in its current position, and retaining that image regardless of human input. This can be especially frustrating to users in the aforementioned situations as this removes the ability to save their data before a necessary reboot. Other issues in this category that may present themselves are a garbled screen, randomly appearing artifacts or distortions in the screen left in the path of the mouse.

As noted before, the best way to combat these problems is to take a trip to the manufacturer's official website where continually updated drivers are invariably available. Search for your product code and see if any updates are listed for it. Often accompanying the updated driver entries are descriptions of the bugs that they remedy; if your issue is described you are in luck! Don't worry if it isn't though; if you are experiencing problems that seem to be related to drivers, it is a good idea to simply find the most recent update and install it. Even if you are not having any problems at all but would like to see improved performance or functionality, a driver update to the newest version will do the trick, although the improvement may be marginal.
